Broadsword
Broadsword and dagger
Christmas present for 2003. Pair of wooden medieval(ish) swords for playing knights with. They should go nicely with the last birthday's siege catapult.
Dagger

Both are made in much the same way. A timber (beech) strip for the blade, shaped with a spokeshave. The hilts have wooden cheeks glued on, then a spiral wrap of three or four lengths of string around them. Peel off one string to leave a spiral groove. A black leather wrap is glued over this, then a length of twisted tinned copper wire is wrapped tightly along the groove to hold it in place. The hilt of the dagger is chip carved in lime/basswood. The broadsword's hilt is gilded.
Materials: beech, leather, copper wire
